BONTOC, Mountain Province – Contributing to the municipality’s disaster preparedness and resiliency, 24 youths and three barangay health workers (BHWs) of Barangay Poblacion underwent Basic and Life Support and Standard First Aid (BLS-SFA) Training from July 22 to 24, 2022.
The training was spearheaded by the municipal government through the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in partnership with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Council of Poblacion.
The training includes a lecture and demonstration on the Principles of Emergency Care and Introduction of Basic Life Support, Lecture on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Return Demonstration on CPR, Lecture on Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO), First Aid Lecture, Stationing on Elastic Bandaging, Triangular Bandaging, Splinting, Extrication and Spine Board Management, and Individual and Group Assessments on the different skills taught.
According to Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officer Meilynne Shalom Ayan, Ashley Vergara, the SK Chairperson of Poblacion personally went to the MDRRM Office to ask for assistance in the conduct of the said activity.
Ayan mentioned that the training capacitates the youth to become force multipliers during times of calamities and emergencies thus improving the disaster response of the municipality.
Meanwhile, Mayor Franklin Odsey was elated when informed that an increasing number of the youth are willing and interested in such training.
“Being equipped with necessary skills on BLS-SFA is useful in times of emergencies and other disasters. Thus, we are extending our full support to such initiatives since the youth acquire skills in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response,” he added.
The training was funded by the SK Council of Poblacion while technical assistance and logistics were provided by the MDRRMO and the Bontoc Emergency Response Team.
