Qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching.

On the other hand, the DOST-SEI Merit scholarship program, formerly known as the NSDB or NSTA Scholarship under RA No. 2067, is awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and is willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.

DOST scholarship privileges include tuition and other school fees (P10,000/semester), book allowance (P10,000/year), monthly living allowance (PhP6,000-PhP4,000/month), transportation allowance, and group insurance, among others.

Deadline for filing of application for the RA 7687 and Merit scholarship programs is on August 25, 2017 while the National Competitive Examination is set on October 15, 2017.
