BAGUIO CITY – Some 82 individuals successfully donated over 36,900 cc of blood to the Philippine National Red Cross Baguio Chapter during the celebration of World Blood Donors Day last Sunday at the Baguio Convention Center.
The conduct of World Blood Dis in celebration of the birthday of Dr. Charles Landsneider who discovered different types of the human blood.
Initially, there were 105 individuals who resented themselves as possible blood donors during the mass blood donation but only 82 were able to be qualified to donate blood pursuant to the screening conducted and that the rest were deferred to do so because of certain problems that were uncove5red by health experts during the screening process.
Among the identified reasons for the deferment of the 23 blood donors were the females had their monthly period, they are newly tattooed and also the medicines that they are they are taking have some effects to the blood that they will donate.
Nevertheless the Red Cross was able collect 36,900 cc’s of blood. However, the collected bloods still need to undergo a test to make sure that the blood is safe for its purpose of being used by other individuals who need the types of blood from them.
The mass blood donation was organized by the city government, the Baguio City Blood Council, the Red Cross Baguio Chapter, in partnership with various schools and civic organizations.
Former City Councilor and Red Cross Baguio Chapter Chairman Erdolfo Balajadia extended the invitation to all interested blood donors to visit the Red Cross office along Harrison Road so that they will undergo the required screening to ascertain whether or not they are qualified to donate blood or they will be deferred for certain reasons.
He said the more blood supply that will be available in the Red Cross, the more lives that the people will be able to save, thus, qualified donors must continue donating blood in order to contribute in stabilizing the local blood supply for the city and nearby areas of Benguet.
