BAGUIO CITY – Some 350 deserving high school and college students will be hired by the city government for their temporary jobs this summer under the government’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) to allow them to earn additional income for their studies.
Mayor Mauricio G. Domogan announced the start of registration for qualified students who wish to avail of the SPES for this year which started last January 11 and will end on February 29.
The SPES was designed to help poor but deserving students finish their studies by giving them employment opportunities during their school breaks like this coming summer.
Jose Atanacio, Executive Assistant IV of the City Mayor’s Office and concurrent Public Employment Services Office (PESO) Manager, said the qualifications for interest6ed SPES registrants include the applicant must be a bonafide resident of the city, must be physically fit, must be 15 to 25 years old at the time of registration, must be currently enrolled or a student who has not been able to enrol for the past semester or academic year but is intending to enrol this coming semester or academic school year, must have garnered an average passing grade during the last school term attended and must belong to families whose parents’ or guardians’ joint income , including his own, if any, do not exceed P116,898 per anum after tax deductions.
Requirements for registration include original copy of birth certificate issued by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) or by the Local Civil Registry Office, original copy of parents’ or guardians’ most recent income return forms; or if parents or guardians are exempt from paying taxes, then the original copy of tax exemption issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and high school student must present last year’s grades, while college and vocational students are requested to present their most recent grades from the first semester or academic year 2016.
Further, former SPES grantees who wish to avail of the program again must also register personally at the PESO during the specified registration period and bring their SPES identification cards.
Atanacio said for this year, the program will be held in two tranches wherein high school students ‘work period shall begin in April to May, while the work period for tertiary level students shall begin in June.
However, he added registration for both high school and college students shall be held simultaneously within the period earlier specified.
An exam for all new registered applicants shall be held on March 6, 2016 from 8 am onwards at the Dona Josefa Carino Elementary School behind the Baguio Justice Hall and that schedule for exam and room assignments will be posted on March 3, 2016 at the PESO bulletin board.
